Fewer Swedes traveled to the mountains during the sports holidays this year compared to 2022, according to statistics from Telia. The only exception was the trips of people from Skåne to Åre, which increased by 22 percent.
The Swedish economy is in a difficult situation, which is affecting household consumption, according to Statistics Sweden. It also seems to have affected Swedes' mountain trips during the sports holidays.
During weeks 7, 8 and 9, the number of trips from Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Skåne to the three largest ski destinations Åre, Härjedalen and Sälen decreased by 9 percent compared to last year, according to traffic data from Telia. The only exception was trips from the Skåne region to Åre, which increased by 22 percent from 2022.
Residents of Västra Götaland were the ones who cancelled their mountain trips the most this year. Trips to Åre decreased by 27 percent and to Härjedalen and Malung-Sälen by 23 and 14 percent respectively. Mountain trips from Stockholm also decreased slightly.
”"What stands out is that only the people of Skåne account for increased travel when the rest of the country is more restrained," says Kristofer Ågren, head of business area data analysis at Telia, in a press release.
From the Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Skåne regions, Sälen was the most popular ski area to go to, as in previous years.
