Finnair has purchased 750 tonnes of Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel™ from Neste to reduce carbon emissions from flights departing from Helsinki Airport in Finland. Renewable jet fuel is one of the most important tools to reduce emissions from air travel in the coming years and is available to all airlines at Helsinki Airport.
Finnair aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, and using more sustainable aviation fuel is a tool that will help achieve that goal. Using Neste MY Renewable Aviation Fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent* over the fuel’s life cycle compared to using fossil jet fuel. The fuel volume that Finnair is now purchasing is the largest single batch of renewable aviation fuel the company has purchased to date. Neste will deliver renewable aviation fuel to Helsinki Airport in early 2023. 750 tonnes of renewable aviation fuel is equivalent to approximately 400 flights between Helsinki and Stockholm with unblended, 100 percent renewable aviation fuel. Currently, renewable aviation fuel can be used blended up to 50 percent with conventional fossil jet fuel.
”Finnair celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, and reducing aviation emissions will be important for a long-term sustainable future. Renewable aviation fuel will be one of the most important tools to reduce emissions in the coming years. We want to involve our customers in this journey, a small portion of every flight ticket sold goes towards the cost of renewable aviation fuel,” says Eveliina Huurre, Finnair’s SVP, Sustainability. ”Reducing aviation emissions requires a comprehensive set of measures and everyone’s efforts. While we increase the use of renewable aviation fuel, we will also continue to take other measures, from reducing aircraft weight to optimizing flight routes and increasing fuel efficiency.”
”Finnair was one of the first airlines to use Neste MY Renewable Aviation Fuel. We have worked together for a long time and look forward to supporting Finnair in achieving its sustainability goals,” says Jonathan Wood, Vice President Commercial & Technical Management, Renewable Aviation at Neste. “It is great to see airlines like Finnair taking the initiative to voluntarily purchase our renewable aviation fuel as part of their sustainability commitments, and raising awareness among their customers about how they can play an important role in creating a more sustainable future.”
Renewable aviation fuel
Renewable aviation fuel provides a more sustainable alternative to conventional, fossil-based jet fuel. Neste MY Renewable Aviation Fuel is produced from raw materials from sustainably sourced 100 percent waste and residue products, such as used cooking oil and animal fat. Renewable aviation fuel is blended with conventional aviation fuel and works with existing aircraft engines and fuel infrastructure.
