Sweden comes in ninth place, but our neighbors to the east are named the happiest in the world in a new UN report.

At the same time, the United States is dropping on the list – despite the country becoming richer.

Finland is the happiest country in the world, when the UN measures happiness in an annual report. Burundi comes in at the bottom and the United States drops four places, despite the country becoming richer. Sweden comes in ninth place.

Overall, the Nordic region appears to be the happiest region on earth. Together, the Nordic countries occupy half of the top ten happiness spots on the list. Finland climbs five places compared to last year, knocking Norway off first place. Denmark is third and Iceland fourth.

This is the sixth time that the UN has measured happiness in the so-called World Happiness Report. This year's report ranks 156 countries based on parameters such as gross domestic product, social safety net, health, freedom and absence of corruption.
New this year is that happiness in 117 countries has also been measured among those born abroad. Finland also tops the list.
