High temperatures and strong winds continue to fuel raging fires in Europe. France is now asking the EU for support – while a state of emergency has been declared in parts of Spain.
Thousands of people have so far been evacuated in a number of European countries, as a result of the rapid spread of forest and terrain fires.
Late on Thursday, Spain declared a state of emergency in the Madrid region and in the province of Ávila after what is described as "uncontrolled" spread.
Around Madrid, around 10,000 people have been evacuated so far, and the state of emergency is intended to accelerate efforts to fight the fires with the help of the military.
France has also been hit by several large fires, and now the country has requested EU assistance to limit the spread.
”"We will soon receive reinforcements in the form of two Croatian Canadair aircraft, two Portuguese Air Tractor aircraft and two Black Hawk helicopters for heavy transport from the Czech Republic and Slovakia," President Emmanuel Macron writes on X.
