Over 200 residents have been forced to flee their homes in the Marshall Islands' capital Majuro after unexpected waves of around five meters hit the area.
At its worst on Wednesday, Majuro's airport was cut off from the rest of the atoll.
The Marshall Islands are one of the flat countries in the Pacific Ocean most vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels, but the extent to which these phenomena are behind these floods is unclear.
