A young man flew from Algeria to Paris, hiding in the landing gear of a plane. He was found at Orly airport on Thursday and taken to hospital, severely hypothermic.

The man's condition is described as serious by the prosecutor's office. He was found when technicians checked the Air Algerie plane after landing.

Regular air traffic usually operates at altitudes where temperatures drop to around minus 50 degrees Celsius. Lack of oxygen is also a risk for those hiding in the uninsulated space.

According to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), there were 132 people who attempted to travel hidden in landing gear between 1947 and 2021. The fatality rate has been 77 percent, according to the FAA.
