Now, air traffic control at Umeå Airport is connecting to LFV's control center RTC Stockholm, thus becoming the third of a total of four airports included in Swedavia's order for remote air traffic control services.
– We are proud to have today commissioned Umeå Airport at the RTC Stockholm control center as the third remotely controlled airport in our collaboration with Swedavia. With remote air traffic control, we increase the availability of aviation in Sweden, which enables increased flexibility for air traffic services and opening hours, says LFV's Director General Ann Persson Grivas.
To ensure a smooth transition, the service will be provided alternately from two management locations, RTC Stockholm and Umeå Airport, for a period of time.
In 2015, LFV was the first in the world to introduce remote air traffic control, Remote Tower Service. Today, several countries have developed and implemented remote air traffic control. It is a global development that is underway to streamline and develop air traffic services.
In 2016, LFV and Swedavia signed a letter of intent to investigate the conditions for remote air traffic control. In November 2017, the agreement was signed, where four airports, Kiruna Airport, Åre Östersund Airport, Umeå Airport and Malmö Airport, are covered by the RTC solution.
Now only the commissioning of Malmö Airport remains in LFV's and Swedavia's joint program. According to the schedule, this will happen before the end of 2023.
