Around 140 firefighters are working to extinguish a large forest fire that broke out southeast of Athens on Sunday.

Greece has already been ravaged by several forest fires, despite warnings that the worst of the summer heat has not yet hit.

According to local media, the fire started in connection with strong winds in the town of Keratéa, just over 30 kilometers from Athens. At least three houses have been completely destroyed in the fire.

Eight helicopters, nine airplanes and almost 40 vehicles are assisting the firefighters.

Residents in a total of six districts have been urged to evacuate.
