April this year was the fourth warmest April ever measured in the world, according to the EU's climate monitoring program Copernicus (C3S).

In southwestern Europe, temperatures were above average – with record highs in both Spain and Portugal.

”April saw exceptionally warm temperatures in Spain and Portugal, accompanied by extremely dry conditions,” writes Samantha Burgess, deputy director at C3S, in a comment, continuing:

”In addition to the southern European heatwave, above-average temperatures were observed over the eastern equatorial Pacific, which is an early sign of a potential transition to El Niño conditions that often lead to warmer global temperatures.”

At the same time, April was colder than usual in an area stretching from the UK to southeastern Europe.
