Anyone lighting a cigarette on a beach or in a public park in France will be breaking the law from today, under new rules aimed at protecting children from second-hand smoke. It reports The Guardian.

Bus shelters and areas directly adjacent to libraries, swimming pools and schools are also covered by the ban.

France is one of the European countries with the highest proportion of smokers, and anyone who defies the ban risks a fine of 135 euros, equivalent to around 1,500 kronor.
