France will introduce an environmental tax for all flights taking off from France, Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
The tax is expected to generate €180 million in revenue in 2020 and will be introduced gradually. For an economy class ticket domestically and within the EU, the cost is expected to increase by approximately €1.50. From this minimum level, the cost is expected to increase in stages depending on the ticket type, and a business class trip to a destination outside the EU could be up to €18 more expensive.
The news added further negative pressure to airline groups on the continent, with Air France-KLM down around 4 percent. German Lufthansa fell just under 2 percent.
