The second Saturday in September is Hiking Day. The Swedish Tourist Association (STF) established the day in 2019 to highlight the joy of hiking, accessible trails and the desire to discover. Around the country, you can go on hundreds of tours, activities and excursions – led by a guide or on your own.
This year's program offers a great variety. There are taste walks where food and nature meet, geology walks that tell the history of the landscape and cultural walks that highlight both art and stories. There will be city walks in historical environments, pilgrimage walks with space for breathing and reflection, and tours where the guide takes participants out for quiet forest bathing or searching for unusual birds. In the mountains, both community and vastness await, while the coast offers everything from seaweed walks to archipelago tours.
– Hiking is an easy way to get out and about and discover new or well-known places in Sweden. Everyone can find a hike that suits them, you don't need expensive equipment or long trips. A pair of comfortable shoes and a packed lunch will go a long way, says Jenny Engström, press manager for the Swedish Tourist Association.
Last year, Hiking Day brought together almost 300 activities all over Sweden and social media was filled with pictures from # Hiking Day. This year, over 200 hikes have already been registered and the program is constantly being expanded.

10 hiking tips
- Dress in layers. A thin shell jacket and warm sweater are better than a warm jacket. This will make it easier to adapt to changes in the weather.
- Wear double socks. Thin wool sock closest to the foot and a sock over it to avoid chafing.
- Choose a pair of really comfortable, well-worn shoes, according to the season and terrain.
- Pack rain gear, you never know how the weather will change.
- Bring a really good packed lunch and water.
- Don't forget a bag to put your trash in to take home.
- Remember first aid, including chafing plasters.
- A poop scooper and toilet paper are good to have with you. Become a certified natural pooper. Get the Bruna cardBrown card – Swedish Tourist Association (svenskaturistforeningen.se)
