German airline Lufthansa has decided to close its low-cost carrier Germanwings and will intensify restructuring programs at Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines.

Lufthansa stated this on Tuesday in connection with the presentation of a restructuring package, reports Dow Jones Newswires.

Lufthansa expects a significant decline in air travel even after the immediate coronavirus crisis and is therefore permanently reducing operations. This will be done in a socially responsible manner, the airline says, and intends to offer continued employment to as many employees as possible.

The decisions will affect almost all flight operations within the group. Among other things, capacity at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs will be reduced.
