Around 700 passenger and freight trains in Germany were halted on Wednesday due to a train drivers' strike that is set to last until Friday. Only about one in four trains were able to run as planned.

The background to the strike, which began on Tuesday, is that the GDL union and train operator Deutsche Bahn disagree about train drivers' salaries.

Economists and industry associations have warned that the strike could exacerbate the problems with bottlenecks in supply chains that are currently affecting German companies.
