The German trade union EVG, which organizes rail and bus workers in the country, has called a nationwide strike on Friday.

The strikers include staff at the German state railway, Deutsche Bahn. The union is demanding a 12 percent pay increase for its members to compensate for rising inflation.

According to EVG vice-chairman Cosima Ingenschay, the purpose of the short warning strike, which has been called between three o'clock in the morning and eleven in the morning, is to "encourage employers to present reasonable proposals" during wage negotiations.

”If that doesn't happen, we will have to consider more extensive strike action,” she says.

Members of Germany's second-largest union Verdi who work in security checks at the airports in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Cologne-Bonn Airport in Cologne are also going on strike on Thursday and Friday. At Hamburg Airport alone, 80,000 passengers are expected to be affected by the action.

Most recently, at the end of March, large parts of Germany's transport sector were paralyzed, when EVG and Verdi went on a joint strike.
