Transport of people and goods across Germany is at risk of being cancelled on Monday. Employees at airports, ports, railways, bus services and underground trains are going on strike in large parts of the country, unions have announced.

”We believe it will be extensive,” says Frank Werneke, president of Verdi, which organizes public sector employees.

Germans are struggling with high inflation, 8.7 percent in February, and unions are demanding compensation. Employers have so far said no.

Martin Burkert, chairman of EVG, which organizes rail and bus personnel, believes that employers are ”turning a blind eye to the economic difficulties” that their members have suffered.

Verdi is demanding a 10.5 percent wage increase, while EVG is demanding a 12 percent increase. It is unusual for unions in Germany to jointly call for a strike.
