Do you want an extraordinary summer job, in the middle of a Swedish summer idyll? Göta Canal is now looking for 100 lockkeepers for the 2025 season – a job that combines service, history and practical responsibility in one of Sweden's most iconic environments.

– We can promise a unique job with fantastic colleagues and meetings with holidaymakers from Sweden, Europe and the whole world, says Magnus Hollwin, Marketing and Communications Manager at Göta Kanal.

A different job with responsibility and community

As a lockkeeper, you work at one or more locks or bridges along the canal. Duties include operating locks, regulating water levels, planning boat traffic and ensuring a smooth flow. An important part of the job is also to give guests a positive overall experience through good hospitality.

“The lockkeepers are our public face, and their ability to create a pleasant experience for our visitors is crucial. Our focus on hospitality and service means that we receive top ratings in our employee surveys year after year,” says Magnus Hollwin.

All necessary training and practice is provided before the season starts, which makes both new and returning employees feel secure in their roles.

For all ages and backgrounds

Working as a locksmith is a popular summer job that attracts both young and old. You need to be 18 years old at the start of the job, but there is no upper age limit – locksmiths over 60 are part of the workforce.

– About two-thirds of our lockkeepers return every year, which creates a good mix of experience and new perspectives. It's a job that combines tradition and innovation, concludes Magnus Hollwin.

Application open now

Do you want to become part of the history of Göta Canal and work in one of Sweden's most beautiful environments? Applications are now open and we look forward to welcoming both new and experienced employees to the team for 2025.
