2021 would have been the year Gothenburg celebrated its 400th anniversary.

But the corona pandemic is putting a damper on things and now the political parties in the city have agreed. The celebration will be postponed for two years to 2023, writes Göteborgs-Posten.

”"There are many uncertainties in the ongoing pandemic that make the work on the 400th anniversary challenging. There is great uncertainty about how the celebration could be carried out," write all parties in the municipal government except for the SD in a joint request.

It was on June 4, 1621 that Gothenburg received its city privileges and the idea is now to hold a smaller ”formal historical” celebration next year to mark the 400th anniversary of the city’s founding. The larger celebration will take place two years later.
