Minister of Infrastructure Tomas Eneroth (S) believes that it is not the state's responsibility to support airports such as Skavsta, Västerås and Bromma.

”"Whether we should have charter airports for tourist traffic and the like, that must be a municipal and regional issue," he tells Dagens Nyheter.

According to the minister, it is not in the cards for the state to step in and support airports affected by the corona pandemic. He mentions in this context that Skavsta, which is 90 percent owned by private interests and 10 percent by the municipality of Nyköping, has been profitable for several years and that the municipality is free to step in with money. The airport is also located within a two-hour radius of Stockholm, which makes state support impossible according to EU regulations.

In Västerås, the political majority has voted to wind up operations and Bromma Airport is, according to its owners, the state-owned company Swedavia, not profitable to continue operating.

Tomas Eneroth doesn't see it making much difference from a capacity perspective if one or more airports disappear.
