There is a clear interest among Swedes in traveling abroad and visiting Christmas markets. This is shown by a new Sifo survey from the travel agency Ticket. Here are some of Europe's best Christmas markets - and tips that may be good to know before your visit.
This time of year, Christmas markets are appreciated by many. According to the latest Sifo survey by travel agency Ticket, 62 percent say they would consider going abroad to visit a Christmas market. For many, it's about combining a short trip with atmosphere, good food and a chance to experience a new city in a winter setting.
– We notice that many people are attracted to Christmas markets abroad, not least because it is often an affordable way to get in the Christmas spirit and a short break from everyday life. At the same time, many people take the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts and try local delicacies, things that make the trip extra memorable, says Tiyoneh Jah, PR and communications manager at Ticket.
Some tips for your visit include trying to go earlier in the day if you want to avoid the biggest crowds – morning hours tend to be quieter than evenings and weekends. Although many stalls now accept cards, it may be wise to bring some cash as smaller vendors do not always accept card payments. It may also be worth looking beyond the main market – some cities also have smaller markets in different squares.
