The forest fires raging in northeastern Greece are, according to the European Commission, "the largest wildfire ever in the EU," reports TT-AFP.
Almost half of the entire Union's aerial fire brigade is fighting the flames, according to spokesman Balazs Ujvari.
Eleven aircraft, including from Sweden, and a helicopter have been sent to Greece to try to stop the spread of the fires.
The area where the fires are raging is close to the border with Turkey and is now in its eleventh day.
