Heavy rain in France

Remove

It has rained unusually heavily in France recently.

Houses have been destroyed and roads have been flooded after heavy rains.

A series of thunderstorms has led to record amounts of rain in some areas. The number of lightning strikes in the country during May was 182,000, almost double the previous record for the month from 2009. There is a high risk that the stormy weather will continue, according to forecasts.

In the community of Morlaix in Brittany, an average month's ration of rain fell in 30 minutes this weekend.

The storm has led to several deaths. A man was found drowned in his car on Tuesday, and a woman was found dead in a river in southern France on Wednesday. Another elderly woman died of a heart attack after her home was flooded. At the end of May, a six-year-old girl lost her life when she fell from a tree in strong winds.
