Hertz reportedly orders 100,000 Tesla cars – the stock rises on the news

Car rental giant Hertz is reportedly ordering 100,000 Tesla cars in a move to electrify its car rental fleet – a deal worth around $4.2 billion, Bloomberg News reports, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Car rental companies often demand big discounts from automakers, but the size of the order means Hertz is paying close to list prices, according to the sources. 

The cars will be delivered over the next 14 months, and Tesla'sTSLA +12,66% The Model 3 will be available for rent from Hertz in major US markets and parts of Europe in early November, the sources said.

The order corresponds to one tenth of Tesla's annual car production.

Tesla rises just over 4 percent in pre-market trading.
