As France goes on holiday, it will likely be the busiest day of the year for traffic, warns Bison Futé, a government agency that monitors roads. By lunchtime on Saturday, a total of 1,073 kilometers of traffic jams were estimated to be winding through the country.
French authorities estimate that Saturday will be the day with the most car traffic in the country all year. The next peak will be Saturday, August 23, when the same number of people will return home after the holidays.
Approximately one million travelers are expected to take French trains this weekend to major holiday destinations such as Marseille, Lyon, Nice, Bordeaux and Lille.
