The pandemic Christmas took a toll on the country's hotel industry. The industry lost 70 percent of its accommodation revenue in December compared to the same month the previous year, according to calculations from the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.
For hotels in Stockholm County, the month was extra tough with a loss of 78 percent.
In December 2019, Swedish hotels recorded 1,307 million kronor in revenue. In the same month last year, the figure stood at 391 million. Overall, Swedish hotels have lost 12 billion kronor in room rents alone since March.
The loss is explained by both significantly lower occupancy and lower average prices for the rooms that are rented out.
”"It is a very dark situation and we are unlikely to see any turnaround until the infection curves turn downward and the restrictions are eased," says Stefan Westerberg, chief economist at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, in a press release.
