Now it's underway, the digital vaccination certificate that will make travel within the EU a little smoother. Initially, Swedish e-ID is required to order the digital certificate.
The cherished free movement within the EU has been hit and miss during the pandemic. But with a common system of certificates showing that you have been vaccinated, it will be easier to travel within the union.
The certificate, which until recently was called the ”green certificate”, is called Covidbevis. Shortly after the midsummer weekend, on July 1, the Swedish E-Health Authority expects to be able to open the service www.covidbevis.se, where you can place your order. In the days before, the necessary regulatory decisions are expected to be made in the EU Parliament and then nationally in Sweden.
– We believe that there will be quite a high demand for the Covid certificates, so we are doing different types of performance tests to make it work, says Annemieke Ålenius, head of department at the E-health Agency.
”Working on it”
Initially, Swedish e-ID is required to order the digital certificate, which shows your name, date of birth and details of which vaccine you received and when. The Covid certificate is then sent to your digital mailbox.
But even those who lack e-ID should be able to receive the document.
– All people, regardless of whether they have an e-ID or not, should be able to get a Covid certificate. We are working on it and hope to have something in place by July 1 even for those who do not have an e-ID, says Ålenius.
Uncertain whether countries will open
Later this summer, the Covid certificate will also be able to show whether you have tested negative for Covid-19 and whether you have had the disease and recovered.
– It takes a little longer, that information is not in the register in the same way as the vaccinations. But we are trying to have it ready as soon as possible and no later than mid-August, says Ålenius.
– The EU regulation includes a transition period, for six weeks after July 1 you should be able to show the evidence you get today of a negative test, she says.
It's worth considering that it's not certain that all doors in Europe will be opened wide just because you come waving a Covid certificate. Each member state decides on its own what applies upon entry, so it's safest to check what applies before you leave.
