At least six people have died after Hurricane Oscar swept through parts of Cuba, according to the country's President Miguel Díaz-Canel. The storm swept through a country more or less paralyzed by a massive power outage that lasted several days.
On Monday evening, local time, Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy stated that most of the capital Havana's approximately two million residents had had power restored.
Cubans are no strangers to long power outages, but the current outage is the worst in a long time. It began on Thursday and grew into a total blackout for the country's nearly 11 million residents on Friday. The reason was a chain reaction after the largest power plant failed in an already strained situation.
Last Sunday, storm Oscar swept over the easternmost, lower part of the island and complicated the work of restoring the power grid.
Schools and business activities are scheduled to remain closed in Cuba until at least Wednesday, due to the electricity problems.
