The coronavirus is spreading at an ever-increasing rate in France, with the highest daily number of new cases reported since May on Wednesday – just days before French children are due to return to school on September 1.
The country's health authorities reported 5,429 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the highest number since the country eased virus restrictions. In recent days, the daily toll has repeatedly topped 4,000.
Prime Minister Jean Castex is urging the people to take their responsibility to stop the spread.
”The state has its share of responsibility, but everyone must feel that it is their own job to fight the pandemic,” he says in a radio interview.
Due to technical problems, updated figures on hospitalisations and deaths could not be presented on Wednesday. So far, over 30,000 people have died in France from Covid-19.
