Insurance companies deny corona concerns as a reason for cancellation

Travel insurance that includes medical care normally covers costs for those infected with the Coronavirus, just like for other illnesses.

But don't expect insurance to provide compensation to those who want to cancel trips due to concerns.

Concern among Swedish travelers is increasing as the Coronavirus spreads. But those who want to take advantage of cancellation protection and similar clauses have little to offer from insurance companies.

The insurance company Europeiska explains on its website that the cancellation protection only applies to cancellations to the area that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against. However, the protection does not apply if someone wants to cancel a trip to any other destination due to fear.

Europäiska also writes that when it comes to package tours, the insured should contact the tour operator.

Länsförsäkringar is also clear and writes that "home insurance, travel insurance or card insurance does not replace a planned trip based on this event.".

Jessica Hjälmered, press officer at If Sweden, recommends contact.

”Customers with planned trips and who are concerned can contact us for advice. Most airlines and travel agents allow rebookings or cancellations,” she says.

Do you have any customers who have been affected?

”"We are evacuating policyholders who are in Hubei province, in accordance with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' recommendation. This concerns a small number of customers that we have helped," says Jessica Hjälmered.

Insurance companies are clear that insured people who are traveling and are affected by the Coronavirus are entitled to compensation for emergency medical care. However, if you choose to travel to areas that the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against, you travel at your own risk. In that case, travel insurance does not normally apply.

Regarding the Coronavirus, the Swedish Foreign Ministry issued an advisory on January 26 advising against travel to Hubei Province in China.
