The German airline Lufthansa's IT system is down, causing major delays and canceled flights.
The extensive IT outage, according to the airline, likely occurred in connection with track work on a train route in Frankfurt. Several fiber optic cables from Deutsche Telekom were reportedly damaged on Tuesday, reports faz.net.
The check-in and boarding systems are affected and the problems affect all flights belonging to the Lufthansa Group. This concerns both Lufthansa's own planes and all planes belonging to the subsidiaries Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Swiss International. Lufthansa also operates the low-cost airline Eurowings.
In total, Lufthansa has around 700 planes.
Air traffic to Frankfurt is now being diverted to other airports such as Cologne and Düsseldorf. With so many unable to take off as planned, the runways have become full.
A Lufthansa spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company is investigating the cause of the error. It is too early to determine whether it is a cyberattack like the one that hit SAS on Tuesday.
Lufthansa's shares fell 2.3 percent on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange after the announcement of the halt.
