The Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority has fined one million Norwegian kroner for being late in compensating customers for canceled trips.
The authority notes that SAS is still far behind in its handling of corona-related compensation claims and notes that today's decision is based on the status on December 1. The authority will make a new decision in January based on the then-current status of the compensation cases.
The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency is investigating in parallel cases where there are several airlines operating in Norway that are suffering from the same old compensation claims, but at the same time notes that SAS and Norwegian stand out in this regard.
Norwegian also does not currently meet the compensation requirements under the Air Passenger Regulation, but since the company is in restructuring, it is not possible to impose a fine.
”"We are clear that the airlines have made a great effort to pay back claims, but we believe that they should have reached their goal now, 9 months after the Covid-19 pandemic began causing cancelled flights," says Director of Aviation Lars Kobberstad in a comment and adds:
”"We understand that airlines are in a demanding situation, both financially and in other ways, but are also keen that customers get their money back according to legitimate demands."”
