EU citizens wishing to travel to Italy will need to be tested for COVID-19 before departure in the future.
The Italian Ministry of Health has decided to do so as a measure to limit the spread of the omicron variant of the virus. The testing requirement will apply from December 16th until January 31st.
If you have not been vaccinated, you will also be expected to be quarantined for five days upon arrival.
The testing requirement is receiving some criticism from the European Commission, which wants all member states to adopt the vaccine passport system.
The Italian government has also extended the state of emergency in force in the country for a few months, until the end of March.
