Italy is opening its borders on Wednesday, just in time for the summer holidays. Visitors from all EU countries and the UK are welcome to enter the country without having to quarantine. The hope is that tourism will help rebuild the economy, which has been hit hard since the country shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Popular tourist attractions such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Colosseum in Rome have already opened their doors to visitors. Italian Alessandra Grimaldi was among the first group of 14 people to enter when the amphitheater in Rome reopened on Monday.

”"We are the most beautiful city in the world. And now we have the opportunity to visit places in a different way, there are so few of us here now so we can enjoy it more," she tells The Guardian.

But soon the crowds could be back on the streets of Italy, which usually welcomes over 60 million foreign visitors a year.
