The diplomatic crisis continues. Now Japan is warning its citizens on the ground in China. Something that has caused the stock market to plummet.
Japan urges its citizens to China to caution and avoid crowds, Reuters reports. The announcement comes amid what is described as the biggest diplomatic crisis in years between the countries.
Calls for a boycott
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated earlier this month that a Chinese attack on Taiwan that threatens Japan's survival may be responded to.
She suggested that Japanese Self-Defense Forces could intervene in the event of a Chinese attempt to invade – a statement that has caused relations between the countries to deteriorate sharply.
After that, the Chinese government called for a boycott of travel to Japan, and this weekend the Chinese coast guard was reportedly seen at the disputed Senkaku Islands between the countries, writes The Guardian.
China is the largest group for the tourism industry in Japan and the advice had an immediate effect. On Monday, shares of several tourism companies plummeted. Leading retail companies also fell by several percent.
