Mitsubishi Heavy Industries decided on Tuesday to abandon its commitment to manufacturing passenger aircraft, a project that has consumed billions of dollars in a 15-year failed bid to gain market share in the US market, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The decision is a blow to national pride in Japan, which had hoped for a return to the commercial aircraft market, led by American Boeing, European Airbus and Brazilian Embraer.
