From August 26th, KLM takes the next step in sustainability by introducing the new A321neo, reducing emissions by 15%.

“A modernized fleet is a very important part of our strategy to reduce emissions. Today, our fleet of 21% consists of the so-called new generation aircraft. Our goal is to reach 64% by 2028. These new planes save 15% of fuel and thus reduce emissions by 15% while being 50% quieter,” says Maria Hagelberg, Head of Sustainability at Air France and KLM North Europe.

KLM, together with Transavia, will introduce 100 new aircraft over the coming years to upgrade the fleet used within Europe. The first of the 100 A321neo entered service in December by Transavia.

Another important part of our strategy to make aviation more sustainable is to reduce the amount of fossil fuel as much as possible and increase the use of sustainable biofuel (SAF) which can reduce emissions by up to 75%. In the last two years, Air France and KLM have been the largest users of SAF globally. In 2023, we used 80,000 tons of SAF which corresponds to 16% of total SAF production. We are proud to be at the top of that list, while only 3% of all renewable fuel is allocated to aviation. We need more production and also in the Nordics.
