The announcement from Sweden's official Twitter account last week that Swedish meatballs actually come from Turkish köfte has sparked cheers and headlines in Turkey, writes The Guardian.

In the Turkish meatball capital of Inegöl, local chef Ibrahim Veysel tells the Dogan news agency that it is an honor that the Turkish dish has become ”a model for different types of cooking throughout the world.”.

Others are less happy. Serdar Cam, head of the Turkish state development agency TIKA, believes that Ikea, which sells over two million meatballs a day, should not launch the dish as Swedish.
And the Turkish television channel TRT World asks in a video on Twitter whether perhaps the famous Swedish coffee break is actually Turkish.
