Large cars to face triple parking fees in Paris

Paris residents have had their say: large and unwieldy cars, particularly SUVs, will have to pay three times as much as other cars in parking fees.

The French capital held a local referendum on the issue on Sunday, and 55 percent of those who voted replied yes.

The decision means that cars weighing over 1.6 tonnes will now have to pay up to 18 euros, or just over 200 kronor, per hour in central Paris.

For electric cars, the surcharge applies to cars weighing over two tonnes. Parisians and certain professional groups may be exempt from the higher charges.

When Mayor Anne Hidalgo called for the referendum, her office wrote that SUVs ”are more prone to accidents, heavy, cumbersome and emit exhaust fumes” and stated that the cars ”cause many of the problems in public spaces”.

Around 1.3 million residents were eligible to vote, but it is unclear how many chose to go to the polls.
