In Georgia's mountainous regions of Svaneti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kazbegi, travelers are greeted by beautiful views and a unique culture shaped over millennia. Here, late summer offers festivals, harvest experiences and a chance to find peace beyond the European holiday rush.

Nature experiences and tranquility in the mountains

Svaneti offers some of Georgia's most dramatic landscapes - from glaciers and mountain ranges to medieval villages with UNESCO-protected defensive towers. The town of Mestia serves as a gateway to the Caucasus, while the surrounding valleys and lakes attract hikers and history buffs alike.

In Racha, the pace is slower and there are fewer visitors. Lake Shaori and Mount Khvamli offer hiking opportunities in untouched nature, and the region is famous for its dessert wine Khvanchkara, a local specialty with a long tradition.

Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is Georgia's most famous mountainous region. Here, Mount Kazbek rises 5,047 meters above sea level, and the small Gergeti Church on its cliff is one of the country's most photographed motifs. The region is popular with both hikers and travelers seeking quiet days among the high peaks of the Caucasus.

Folk festivals

Late summer in Georgia is a time for festivals and gatherings. Racha hosts the International Folklore Festival Sakartvelo where dance, music and ensembles from all over Europe meet. The program ranges from traditional music and ethno jazz to workshops in dance and singing.

During Pudzeoba The region's heritage is celebrated through local crafts, traditional sports and culinary delights - an insight into how mountain communities keep their roots alive through the generations.

Harvest joy and wine traditions

Rtveli, the annual grape harvest, starts in August/September and is one of Georgia’s most beloved traditions. Visitors are invited to participate in the harvest – from picking grapes to crushing them into must – before the day ends with a festive meal.

In Kakheti, the country's premier wine region, the harvest season culminates with the wine festival Gurjaani in October. Here, large producers and small family vineyards gather in a celebration of Georgia's 8,000-year wine tradition.

A spiritual retreat

The Georgian Highlands offer a cooler climate, great hospitality and beautiful nature. Among the green valleys and mountain peaks, there is time and space to breathe and encounter authenticity and tranquility in the regions of Svaneti, Racha and Stepantsminda.
