Lufthansa says there are 22,000 redundant roles as it begins negotiations with unions. The airline aims to reach an agreement by June 22, according to a press release.

According to Lufthansa, the cuts will affect all parts of the business, from pilots (600) and cabin crew (2,600) to administration and subsidiaries (Lufthansa Technik 4,500 jobs). The losses will be greatest in the catering company, with 8,300 roles disappearing.

Lufthansa writes that it wants to retain as many employees as possible during the Covid-19 crisis and avoid layoffs. Therefore, it is open to partially compensating for the surplus staff through short-time work, collective agreements on fewer working hours per week or other cost-cutting measures.

Lufthansa's latest announcement comes after it secured nine billion euros from the German state, which in return received 20 percent of the airline.

Previously, a spokesperson for the German airline said that Lufthansa estimates the redundancy at 26,000 people.
