Germany's dominant airline Lufthansa is losing one million euros - every hour. This is going on night and day and will likely continue for months, says CEO Carsten Spohr in a video message to staff.

The loss corresponds to just over a quarter of a billion kronor a day.

The strain on the company's cash reserves, as a result of the coronavirus, means that Lufthansa will apply for government support in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Austria, Carsten Spohr announced.

”"I am optimistic that the talks in Bern, Berlin, Brussels and Vienna will yield good and positive results," he says in the video.

The virus outbreak has led to Lufthansa being forced to park over 90 percent of its fleet on the ground.

SAS collaborates with Lufthansa within the framework of the Star Alliance airline network.
