Lufthansa is ready to invest up to 200 million euros in troubled Italian airline giant Alitalia. The Italian company is looking for new money and its cash is running low, Reuters reports, citing sources. The information is also backed up by two Italian media outlets.

Lufthansa has reportedly written to the Italian Ministry of Economy and the railway giant Ferrovie dello Stato, both of whom will help with the financing. The German company has reportedly offered to provide 150-200 million euros, according to the letter.

Alitalia's weak finances are a real drag on the company. The company has been under financial pressure for many years.

Lufthansa has chosen not to comment on the information.
