A major ground fire is raging near Arlanda Airport in Sigtuna municipality, north of Stockholm. So far, air traffic is not affected, the fire is surrounded, but not yet under control.

The fire service is on site with 16 units, around 50 people, to fight the fire, which covers approximately 50,000 square meters, Johan Winsnes, operator at the Greater Stockholm Fire Department, tells TT.

”"We are working to contain the fire. It is located approximately directly south of Arlanda, between the two runways that run in a north-south direction."”

”"We have requisitioned two helicopters that are on their way, and that will water the area from the air. The current forecast is that the operation will take more than four hours," says Johan Winsnes.

The risk of spread is not acute, he explains.

”"But it depends on winds and whether we manage to contain the fire. Our goal is that air traffic should not be affected."”

The fire was discovered at Nybygget, an area where home builders have showrooms, on County Road 273 just after 2 p.m.

”"There is currently no impact on air traffic," says Ellen Laurin at Swedavia's press service to TT.

According to police, the fire has not affected road traffic in the area.
