Mallorca says adiós to plastic bags, disposable razors, straws and several other items that litter the island.

Dying whales, hundreds of thousands of tons of waste and a polluted ocean have become a wake-up call for the holiday paradise. A new littering law will soon come into effect.

The Balearic parliament has voted through a littering law that tightens the rules on disposable items made of plastic, reports Spanish news site Rtve.

Items such as straws, bags and various plastic packaging often end up in the ocean and are a major contributor to pollution.

The new law means that single-use plastic items must be replaced with products made of biodegradable materials by 2021.

Other goods such as plastic bags, razors, certain lighters and coffee capsules made of non-compostable material will also be banned on the tourist island, which is forced to handle 800,000 tons of waste per year.
