Hotel chain Marriott is now offering to pay for new passports for customers affected by the company's extensive data breach.
Late last week, Marriott announced that personal data for 500 million customers of its subsidiary Starwood had been accessible to unauthorized parties for a long time. The leaked data included customers' passport numbers.
US Senator Chuck Schumer, along with other lawmakers, has urged Marriott to pay for passport replacements, which in the US cost $110 for an adult, and the company has now agreed to this.
”Right now, the clock is ticking to minimize the risk customers face, and one way is to request a new passport to make it harder for thieves to create a complete picture of the identity,” the senator said, according to Fortune.
Marriott acquired Starwood in 2016, creating the world's largest hotel chain. The chain's many hotel brands include JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, W Hotels, Sheraton, Le Méridien, Westin and Courtyard.
