Melbourne is now opening after four months in strict quarantine

From Wednesday, residents of Melbourne and the state of Victoria will be able to return to a more normal life. After having the strictest restrictions in Australia and one of the strictest in the world, they are now opening up after 111 days of quarantine.

“Now is the time to congratulate every resident for staying the course,” said Danel Andrews, Premier of the state of Victoria, during a press conference.

In July, the state was reporting over 700 confirmed cases a day, forcing authorities to take drastic measures to stop the spread. On Monday, zero new cases were reported for the first time in nearly 20 weeks, much to the delight of many.

But despite the positive figures, caution remains, and many restrictions will only be lifted gradually.

– If we do too much too quickly, we will be where none of us want to be. Doing this again, says Danel Andrews.
