This year, more than 30 million passengers will land at or take off from Copenhagen Airport Kastrup, the largest in the Nordic region.
The milestone will be passed on Thursday and can be compared to the airport's first year in 1925, which totaled 2,100 passengers.
– It is a development that has been significant since the airport's inception. From being something a bit elitist that the rich did, today it is something we do quite often. Whether it is on vacation or for work. Flying has become commonplace, says Peter Krogsgaard, commercial manager at the airport.
There have been some problems along the way, such as World War II, the oil crisis of the 1970s, a few crisis years in the 1980s and the time after the September 11 attacks. Today, the focus is more on climate impact when the future of aviation is discussed.
“We haven't seen any impact yet, but I feel that there is a completely different awareness of how aviation affects our planet,” says Krogsgaard, who adds that airlines are making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.
