On Monday, a new global heat record was measured when the world's average temperature reached 17.01 degrees Celsius, according to data from the American Center for Environmental Predictions NCEP, reports the Guardian.

Monday's average temperature broke the previous record from August 2016. At that time, an average of 16.92 degrees was measured globally. 

Heat waves have been reported in the southern United States and China, and temperatures of nearly 50 degrees were measured in North Africa.

Even in Antarctica, where it is currently winter, unusually high temperatures were recorded. Temperatures of 8.7 degrees were measured there, breaking the previous record for the month of July.
