Vacationing in the Swedish mountains is becoming increasingly popular, reports SVT Norrbotten. The number of bookings at the Swedish Tourist Association's mountain resorts has increased by ten percent this year compared to the same period last year.
”"We call it the Svemester trend. Above all, we notice it in people's social channels where they proudly say they are staying in Sweden and #svemester has spread quickly where people are telling us about their favorites," says Jenny Engström, communications manager at the Swedish Tourist Association (STF), to the TV channel.
For example, it is expected that between 8,000 and 10,000 people will attempt to climb Kebnekaise's peak this year.
With more tourists also come more inexperienced hikers and more accidents. Mainly people underestimate rapid weather changes, their own fitness or believe that mobile phone coverage is reliable, according to a survey conducted among tourist associations along the Swedish mountain range in 2017.
The peak summer season in the mountains is the last weeks of July and the beginning of August.
