The mosquito plague has reached Iceland – one of the few places that has so far been spared. Three specimens of the greater spring mosquito (Culiseta annulata) were found last week in Kjós north of Reykjavik, reports Icelandic newspaper Morgunbladid.

– I immediately realized that this was something I had never seen before, Björn Hjaltason, who discovered the mosquitoes in his garden, tells the newspaper.

Matthías Alfredsson, an entomologist at the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, was later able to identify the insects. And the mosquito is probably ”here to stay,” he tells public service broadcaster Rúv.

Scientists have warned that the mosquito could soon find its way to Iceland, Rúv reports. The discovery comes as the Atlantic island is warming four times faster than the northern hemisphere as a whole. Glaciers are collapsing and fish from warmer waters, such as mackerel, have recently been found in Icelandic waters.
